Baldur's Gate 3: Is It Turn-Based?

Will Baldur's Gate 3 be turn-based, just like real Dungeons & Dragons?
Baldur's Gate 3: Is It Turn-Based?

Baldur's Gate 3 is fast approaching, with the game set to launch at the start of August, and it's got potential fans asking a whole bunch of questions. One of these questions is whether the game will be turn-based, similar to how the TTRPG Dungeons & Dragons, which Baldur's Gate 3 is based on, is turn-based.

Is Baldur's Gate 3 Turn-Based?

While you're in combat, you'll be fighting in turns, with the turn order depending on who rolls the highest 'initiative' (a D&D term that dictates turn order and is a way of making the game fairer so you can't just breeze through all combat encounters). You'll be able to control all of your teammates and set up attacks or strategies for the battle ahead.

When you're out of combat, however, you'll be able to move around however you want. You can explore the world, discover new things and uncover more and more elements of the stories to your hearts desires without being held by the constraints of time itself.

Larian is used to making turn-based titles, with games such as Divinity Original Sin 2 being the prime example here. That game is beloved by critics and audiences alike, so if Baldur's Gate 3 is anything like it, it's going to be special.
