How To Respec Your Character In Baldur's Gate 3

If you make a mistake during your gameplay, there is a way to correct it through respec and the multiclassing mechanic in Baldur's Gate 3.
How To Respec Your Character In Baldur's Gate 3

Baldur's Gate 3 has many character options, from race and subrace to classes and subclasses, backgrounds, abilities, and more. And as you continue your playthrough in-game, there will likely be a moment where errors are made, especially when confronted with decisions that may impact your character and your playstyle.

There is a plus side to this situation, as developer Larian Studios will allow players to respec their characters and continue their adventures. They've added additional support to give you more freedom to play with the multiclass mechanic. So what is multiclassing, and how can you respec your character? Here's what you need to know.

Changing Classes In Baldur's Gate 3: How To Respec

Yes, absolutely; players can change their characters through a new feature introduced to the gaming series called multiclassing. What is multiclassing, you may ask? Well, multiclassing was first introduced in Dungeons & Dragons' fifth edition, which allows players to pick and choose advantages from other classes to create a more well-rounded build.

This mechanic is now making its way to Baldur's Gate 3, allowing players to further customize their builds with their chosen or current character. How this works is that players can easily switch to a different class and utilize that specific class' abilities, skills, spells, and other perks anytime they want.

This allows players to respec their character whenever they choose to without causing any disruption to their gameplay experience. According to the game's Lead Designer, Nick Pechenin, during the Panel From Hell livestream in July 2023, the ability to respec your character will let you avoid "having to restart the whole game because it's a very heavy narrative experience."

There's a character you might meet—you will most likely meet—that will allow you reset your class and reinvest all of the levels.

A designated NPC in-game will guide players on how to respec their character and also on multiclassing, which will let them reallocate their scores and levels on the new class. This won't reset the game, so your game saves are safe, as you can continue your campaign or go back to the character creation menu.

The multiclassing mechanic does give players the freedom to try out multiple combinations, which can aid you in progressing with the game and your character levels. But do keep in mind that certain classes work well with each other regarding skills, damage, spell, and class abilities being reasonably similar in attributes.

Some examples of multiclassing builds are spellcasting fighter (Wizard and Fighter), tanky druid (Druid and Barbarian), and spellsword build (Sorcerer and Paladin). With multiclassing, you can pick the best attributes and skills a class may offer and paired with your main class.
